Think of your email inbox as a private diary. You would not leave it open on a table for anyone to read. But many of us make small errors that do the same thing with our digital messages. These slips can let strangers see your personal information, photos, or private details.
Protecting your emails is not always about complex hacking. Often, it is about avoiding simple, everyday mistakes. Here are common errors that can put your emails at risk.
Sending to the wrong person:
This is one of the easiest mistakes to make in email security. Email programs often try to guess who you are writing to. If you are not paying close attention, you might select the wrong “John” or “Sarah.” In an instant, your message meant for a friend gets sent to a coworker. A message with private details could go to a complete stranger. Always double-check the recipient’s address before you hit send.
Using simple passwords:
A weak password is like a flimsy lock on a door. Using easy-to-guess words like “password123” or your birthdate makes it simple for someone to break in. A strong password is long and uses a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Do not use the same password for your email as you do for other websites. If one site has a problem, all your accounts could be in danger.
Falling for fake links:
Sometimes you might get an email that looks real, maybe from your bank or a social site. It asks you to click a link and log in. This is a trick called phishing. The link goes to a fake website designed to steal your login details. If you enter your password, the scammers now have access to your real account.
Ignoring two-step verification:
Two-step verification adds an extra layer of security. After you type your password, a code is sent to your phone. You must enter this code to get into your email. If you do not turn this on, a thief only wants your password to get in. With two-step verification, they would also not your phone. It is a simple setting that makes your account much safer.
Using public Wi-Fi carelessly:
Public Wi-Fi at a coffee shop or airport is convenient, but it is often not secure. Other people on the same network might be able to see what you are doing. If you log into your email on an open network, someone could steal your password. Avoid checking your email on public Wi-Fi if you can.
